Barama, a backward place with all sorts of odds like mal-nutrition, poor life expectancy, hazardous communication, blind faiths & beliefs, economic backwardness, negligible scope for education, and above all, the indifference or rather the total unawareness regarding the explosion of knowledge and of the fast changing life-style, hardly expected a college in
1971. However, a handful of people headed by Late Surendra Nath Das, the sitting M.L.A. of Barama Constituency at that time, showed their foresightedness and came up with the ambitious plan of establishing a college at Barama. The central objective of establishing a college was to usher in a new era for the people of Barama in order to keep pace along with the outer world in terms of knowledge, power, education, science & technology. Barama College, it was expected, would discharge a significant role in spreading higher education to the incumbents of this vast area mostly dominated by the tribal people representing different rich cultural heritage. The dream came true to a considerable extent when Barama College was established in 5th of February, 1971. The Department of Assamese was established in the maiden year in Pre-Degree level to impart compulsory MIL teaching as no other subject was introduced in lieu of Assamese. However, the department also imparted teaching of Assamese as an elective subject, which was known at that time as Second Language, currently known as Advance Assamese. The under graduate level study started from 1973, the department did offer MIL and Second Language programmes to the students in the initial years. In 1979, the department went ahead with the introduction of Honours (currently coined as MAJOR) in Assamese in two-year degree course and four students of the first batch passed out with flying colours securing second class. It deserves mention that securing first class was a distant dream in literature subjects and in later years one or two students could only secure first class as if once in a blue moon.
